^^ is also not about making yourself look busy or anything. I mean if someone keeps messaging me everyday or even a few times a day I get annoy too. It also gives you more time. Like you don't always have to constantly check your phone.
When I have having dinner now with friends or family I flip the screen on the table so I don't even see any message lights. Same with if I am watching TV. If it is a message it not important and it can't wait. If it is something important people will call.
