I flew from Tokyo to HK via Beijing on a china airline and it was fine, except Beijing was fucking disgusting. Couldn't see 5 feet in front of you outside, and the air smelled like acid. I couldn't stand to be there even walking from the plane to the terminal. Then when you go to the terminal pretty much everywhere is considered a smoking area.
The flight itself was fine, albeit much shorter than going all the way from Vancouver... If you can limit your exposure to china itself, it should be OK
