How often did OP maintain this car (assuming never, since it was "hardly driven")? Regardless of the make, an oil change is the least costly maintenance you can do.
If OP can't/isn't willing to do such minor maintenance, maybe it's time to only have one car and rent/borrow the second one when needed.
