The federal privacy commissioner’s office is cautioning cannabis users that if they buy pot with a credit or debit card, that data may be stored in a different country and will be subject to that country’s laws.
With the U.S., authorities can easily access your purchase history.
Just consuming cannabis could be grounds to bar you from the U.S. The commissioner’s office recommends removing pictures or proof of pot purchases from your phone before crossing the border, but warns never to lie to border officers.
If you live in a province with private sales, stores may still collect information like your name, address, and credit card number. While companies have a duty to safeguard that info, in our digital age, it could be at risk or shared with a third party.
