I get ask alot and will probably make a detail video down the road regarding it.
There is the tourist way for doing it and you apply for Carnet ehich is like a passport for cars. Then you wont have to pay tax on it. However it was a lengthy process so I wrote a bill of sale and “sold” the car to the shop. Any car even for traveling will require inspection and smog in Japan to be driven on the road. My car failed miserably therefore I am driving around with the shops repair plate. That saved me couple thousand dollar.
Here is a break down in CAD
- 20ft container including loading in Canada side $3600 (one way, coming back is abit more. Around $5500. I would only ship my own container and not do Ro on Roll off)
- unloading and custom clearence $850
- tax $1500
- towing from dock back to the shop (yokohama to sayama) $1000
- inspection/smog/insurance $500
If you want to plate it and drive in Japan, it will be another $2200 + labour on making thr car passes.
Also i would noted that you get a temporary export form from cbsa and keep your BC registration so when the car comes back, you dont have to pay tax and do another oop.
