You ask ten shooters what gun to buy first and you will get 20 different answers. Everyone has personal preferences, my suggestion would be to try to get out and shoot as many different guns as possible and find out what you think feels the best in your hands and budget.
The S&W you mentioned is popular due to the price tag, and if you like 9mm and semi-autos, then it is a good value. I shot a few M&P's and I never liked their trigger, I shot a Glock much better. I don't own any plastic guns by choice, I prefer metal and larger calibers, but there again is just my opinion.
I would recommend a good .22 in both handguns and rifles, though. Lots of practice time behind the trigger at the fraction of the cost of any other larger caliber.
