Obviously there is many variables, when i purchased my wifes vehicle we went with the ICBC because i know the headaches
Also take note that if the person is pushing the aftermarket policy read how much they will directly make if you sign the paperwork they usually pocket $300-$550 and much less with icbc

I agree, it is often easier to deal with one party (ICBC). However the reviews I have read about the 3rd party company all have been positive/straightforward.
People make commission no matter what. I try not to let that influence my purchase decisions. I'll buy whatever I think is best for me.
