Did you try Civic, Mazda 3?
The jetta's pedal was stiff from a stop and there was noticeable delay when I tried to put the pedal down from a roll. Other than that, it is a really good car. Not too sure about long term reliability.
Still can't decide what to get in the compact segment...

I am literally one day into ownership, but I am liking the motor so far. I miss my TDI - it had 156hp and 267tq, so it pulled out quite nicely while giving 42mpg no matter how much black smoke you kicked out.
I didn't even consider the Civic or Mazda 3, I really don't like the looks of either of them. The Mazda 6 I liked, but I also needed to consider mileage as I drive 200km+ per day and 40k+ per year. SO I was looking for mileage, then looks/features I could live with, for around $40k. The Jetta fit the bill; I like the looks of this MKVII, I didn't car for the 2014-2017 year designs at all.
This new Jetta motor has owners reporting 40-45mpg, so I decided to give it a try. All of the features are overwhelming, plus everything on a touchscreen is cool. My sons like the heated rear seats.
