This is how the state ref tests in Cali:

meter is set 19 inches away from exhaust @ 45 degree angle,
engine revs @ 4200rpm,
max allowable is 95 decibels.


The owner of this WRX is doing this to fight the $1000 ticket he got. With the Nameless muffler deletes which scored at around 90 decibels, the car technically has passed under Cali rules (it's still up to the judge to decide whether the owner deserves to have the ticket canceled), but it would have failed here at our much lower 84 decibel limit if the test were done the same way.

Just for reference, below are values for a stock Jaguar F Type-R (according to Edmunds):

Sound level @ idle (dB) 45.1
@ Full throttle (dB) 84.4
@ 70 mph cruise (dB) 67.3
