Yeah, multiple monitors are still the best way for most use cases, and I believe there's some psychology behind having separate monitors for different purposes that improves workflow. Something to do with your brain processing things separately.
I found that all third party applications I tried had something lacking and none of them were as fluid and intuitive as Windows Snap.
Spectacle (which is free) works great if you're in a macOS environment. You can just assign a Windows Snap-like hotkey and get three columns (and more).
