I don't think so at all.
Back in those days, the majority of North American's didn't give two shits about most import cars in general (except for the fuel economy of the Japanese stuff).
If you were a "somebody" you drove a Caddy or Lincoln...period! Think of all the pop culture songs etc from that time, all they mentioned was Caddy, or Continental etc.
Only since the 00's has pop culture attention shifted to what we hear about now.
Brands like BMW, Volvo, MB etc were all too foreign and obscure to even consider. Parts and servicing were a hassle away from major cities, so the market was terribly small.
Heck, in the early 00's when I met my GF who was raised on a farm in Sask. I mentioned my BMW and she gave me this look like "wtf is that supposed to mean?". Then I mentioned BMW to her father and he was like "who makes that? is that a Ford product?"
