If you were a "somebody" you drove a Caddy or Lincoln...period! Think of all the pop culture songs etc from that time, all they mentioned was Caddy, or Continental etc.
Only since the 00's has pop culture attention shifted to what we hear about now.
Brands like BMW, Volvo, MB etc were all too foreign and obscure to even consider. Parts and servicing were a hassle away from major cities, so the market was terribly small.

VW and Volvo were certainly around. There were VW bugs everywhere, and the 240dl did well enough.
Can't say Volvo parts were hard to get since they made the actual cars in Halifax.
Also when the Rabbit arrived in the late 70's it did quite well.[
