In both logo design and commissions, the designer should work with you from begining to end, ultimately creating a piece of art that you both put work into. The designer's job is to put your dreams and vision on paper.
I guess in layman's terms, the app gives you a cookie cutter design of your car. Whereas the artist would add their artistic vision and style to compliment your car.
Or in car terms, you can buy a car and then you add Spoon parts to it (app - cookie cutter/everyone has access) or you can buy the car and get things custom fabbed to how you want it but within the limitation of the engineer (designer).

Well said. Really, same reason I mod my cars is for the individuality. I'm paying for the designer for an art of my own car. I can refer back to this, and actually rejoice in the fact and enlightenment (ok that's just me) that this photo/art is MY car, rather than just any 'cookie cutter' NSX art that came from Honda. To me, it's like putting up a poster of someone elses' landscape photo in your living room, versus putting up a photo you took yourself. You always look at it and say "Hey, that's MY photo."
Unfortunately, in HK I valet my car a lot because of the parking problems/culture here. But it ALWAYS brings a smile to my face, when the valet guys are looking for the keys and say "Oh the red nsx, yeah the one with the keychain"
