The first permanent settlement in Canada (now Quebec) was formed by the jesuits missionaries in early 1600's. Brought by Samuel de Champlain under order of the kingdom of France to convert the pagan aboriginals.

Jesuits were also sent to South and central Americas to convert the millions of aboriginals who inhabited the continent.
This was done to counter the growing number of protestant followers, during the period leading to the thirty years war (1618-1648 i believe) which involved all countries of Europe between these two factions of Christianity. Millions dead. Yada yada yada.

No doubt material gain was a big factor in the establishment of colonies. But it can't be overstated the initial goal of the French to grow the Catholic church during the period of that holy war.

Ps. I haven't watched those videos yet tho. They are loooong dude. But I'm gonna watch them tonight as i do love good Canadian history docs. And i do appreciate you sharing
