The banned Indian official is Narendra Modi, a longtime Hindu nationalist who is the prime ministerial candidate of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP. Nine years ago, U.S. officials denied Mr. Modi a visa just as he was preparing to travel to New York to address Indian-Americans at a rally scheduled in Madison Square Garden.

That 2005 decision was based on Mr. Modi's failure to stop a series of deadly riots three years earlier by Hindus against minority Muslims in the Indian state of Gujarat, where he was (and remains) chief minister. The State Department invoked a little-known U.S. law passed in 1998 that makes foreign officials responsible for "severe violations of religious freedom" ineligible for visas. Mr. Modi is the only person ever denied a visa to the U.S. under this provision, U.S. officials confirm.

Tulsi Gabbard called ‘Mascot of India's KKK’ at Texas Presidential Forum

As U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) joined the first presidential forum of the 2020 election, she was protested for the second time in a month by demonstrators disturbed by her ties to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Holding signs that said “Tulsi, Mascot of India’s KKK,” approximately 30 demonstrators protested outside the She the People forum hosted on the campus of Southern Texas University (TSU) in Houston, Texas.

According to a press release issued by the Organization for Minorities of India (OFMI), the diverse group included Indian-Americans from Buddhist, Muslim, and Sikh backgrounds, as well as African-Americans.

According to the OFMIL press release, the forum, hosted at the largest black university in Texas, focused on issues affecting women of color. “Women of color are expecting to be represented here today,” said demonstrator Jada Bernard. “But the only thing that Tulsi Gabbard represents is the people that are financially backing her, which is the RSS, which is responsible for violating and slaughtering India’s women of color.”

The RSS is accused of engaging in organized violence against India’s religious minorities as well as Dalits. Notably, it is linked to a 2008 pogrom against Christians in Odisha and a 2002 pogrom against Muslims in Gujarat. The United Nations has called the RSS an “ultranationalist” group that promotes “Hindu extremism,” and the U.S. State Department reports that it is “implicated in acts of violence and discrimination against Christians and Muslims.”

NEW DELHI / CHICAGO: The World Hindu Congress, held in Chicago between September 7 and 9, received widespread media attention, in particular for the keynote address by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat. The Congress was organised by fellow Sangh Parivar organisation the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

What barely made headlines, however, was a concerted effort by a small but determined group of protesters, who gathered at the venue in Chicago with banners and chants of ‘Stop Hindu Fascism’. A couple of protesters were arrested and later released, charged with disorderly conduct and trespassing.

One of the protesters, South Asian affairs analyst Pieter Friedrich described the RSS as “the KKK of India”.
