I spent a decade working in an automotive assembly plant. We had a fuel pump design issue. They changed the height the fuel pump was mounted in the tank by 2mm. For two hours a day I would install 100 tanks with another associate. We noticed immediately the 2mm difference was causing the fuel lines coming out of the pump to touch the metal underside of the vehicles and filled out a Kaizen report regarding the issue. As per usual a couple indignant engineers came down to have a look. They barely spoke to us and made a production of rolling their eyes and making snarky comments when investigating it and left. Nothing was changed about the design. A few months later there was a recall when gas tanks started leaking due to vibrations from the floor wearing a hole through the fuel line at the contact point. The hubris of automotive engineers knows no bounds.
