I realize this is a forum (and also RS), but man this is getting kinda wack.
Your (not aimed at anyone) anecdotal experiences do not reflect upon Canadian society as a whole. Most Canadians (except experts in this field, which I assume aren't fighting on RS) are just normal people trying to navigate through this shitstorm of something most of us never experienced before, trying to balance out living a somewhat regular life, doing what officials are telling us to do, and looking out for the health and safety of our loved ones while also trying to weed out the misinformation and downright bullshit that seems so prevalent this day and age.
Obviously it makes sense to look at other countries and their situations and responses, but you also have to realize that cultures, government policies, standards of living, etc., are all very different than here.
I'll use S. Korea as an example, because I'm Korean and my parents are currently there. They tested fucking everybody - we obviously can't do that here because Korea experienced outbreaks before and had a plan with resources and infrastructure in place. Then they traced back the steps of positive cases and informed people that may have been exposed, because they have so many fucking CCTVs and location tracking and all these things that we don't have in place here. Consensus is SKorea has a bit of a handle on things right now, and their response to this is mostly praised except a select group of people - fucking South Koreans. It's politically motivated but hardcore conservatives in Korea are outraged over the president's response to this - and are spreading misinformation like photoshopped images of the president using the wrong hand to cover his heart when singing the national anthem.
Let's leave that shit out of here. I see people fighting on FB because government said healthy people shouldn't wear masks, and how it's just a ploy because there's a mask shortage. Well fuck, if there really is a mask shortage, what is arguing about it going to do? Canada is not like Asia where wearing masks is a common thing because our air quality is far better than theirs, and therefore it doesn't make sense to have a huge stockpile of masks other than medical use. "But Hong Kong has a small outbreak because everyone wore masks!!" - maybe, but how is that going to help us now other than inciting panic and having shitheads steal masks from hospitals for people that actually really need them.
You also have to realize that we really do live in one of the best places on Earth - and that has produced a LOT of stupid, entitled people. Idiots that will block a busy intersection in front of a hospital so they can 'raise awareness' for something they have nothing to fucking do with. Idiots that will buy $70K worth of lysol wipes and flip them for huge profit at the expense of others because capitalism ftw! Idiots who hoard 400L of perishable milk and idiots who blatantly go to crowded places and bitch that their concert is cancelled.
"Locking down" is easy in theory but take a step back and think about it - who will enforce this? What about the idiots who scream "but muh human rights!". How is the economy going to survive when the government just shuts everything down?
"Trudeau is a pussy for letting Americans in!!" Have you considered that Americans really have no desire to come up here for leisure because their shit is also hitting the fan, haard? We ban Americans, the big cheeto down south retaliates out of sheer childishness because MAGA, and now there really is a food/supply shortage. Then you'll blame Trudeau for fucking us over!
It's a fucked up time right now, whether you think this is overblown or not. Just be adequately prepared as much as you can without being assholes hoarding shit you don't need, stay the fuck home if you're sick, and do what you're told by the government not because you're sheeple, but because it's the fucking decent thing to do when everything is so uncertain. Everyone is scared, if not of the virus than at least with all the sudden changes - but remember that there are people much worse off than you that actually may not make it through this, and lend a helping hand when you can. Be nice to retail workers, and be nice to elderly people and vulnerable people. Just be nice, and stop bickering about things that honestly don't matter at this point.
Fucking be what Canadians are stereotyped for being.
