Scrap the built in wifi and buy some Ubiquiti Unifi access points. I bought a 3 pack years ago and it covers the whole house plus the yard. Cost me around $350. You'll need ethernet cabling where you want to mount the AP though... but that's going to be the case with whatever extender you want to use anyways.
