No kidding. I spent countless hours in Chinatown as a kid as that was our main grocery spot growing up. Groceries, meals, haircuts, toys and slippers.
Man I have soooo many more memories of hanging out in Chinatown vs other parts of the city.
6 or 7 years ago I parked by Strathcona school every, and walked through Chinatown Keefer or Pender to work at an office by Tinseltown. Even back then I saw first hand how Chinatown had changed from it's heyday.
Last year I visited San Francisco Chinatown for the first time. Man it was an incredible experience.
It was probably 2 or 3 times the size of Vancouver Chinatown. And the streets were PACKED. So many of the shops were as authentic as Chinatown as it gets. From the grocers to the herbal stores to the restaurants.
I loved hearing so many of the Chinese people speak the "villager" dialects I grew up with LOL.
I don't know what San Fran's Chinatown was like back in the day. But to me it felt like it was absolutely thriving.
Couldn't help but think "Man. This place is incredible compared to our Chinatown...."
