They don't need more people to vote for Trump, they just need the RIGHT people to vote for Trump.
They can win the election by gaming the system. Stacking their efforts in place where the American Electoral College has the most amount of votes within their possible/plausible audience.
The Republicans can write off the entire state of California because its a "Librul Stronghold" but focus efforts in a place like Wisconsin or Ohio because the folks in those states will statistically turn out in greater force to vote Red. It doesn't matter if the entire city of Milwaukee votes blue (and probably will) because all of the other counties combined, despite being rural, can flip the state red.
This is why you see Republicans double down on their base. They bring those die hard "Good Ol' Boys" out, parade them around, and it emboldens Grandma and Grandpa to wheel their oxygen tanks to the voting center and vote for the elephant. They don't give a shit about a place like Oregon or Idaho but they'll fight tooth-and-nail for Florida.
And the Democrats know this, but it so happens that those within the Democratic demographic gravitate to areas like California, Colorado, New Mexico, etc. This is why you see politicians play to the smoothbrains who will eat this stupid shit up. They know its ridiculous, we know its ridiculous, but Randy who spends his time smoking meth and working on his Trans-Am thinks "Wow, the biznuss man is real smart and hes my guy!"
Hilary suffered from complacency and assumed that 8 years of a sexy-ass brutha in charge meant that the voting public was ready for more radical changes. She listened to the polls but didn't understand that the people who voted for a near-decade of Bush were still part of the voting public. She was seen as "talking down" to them (when she assumed that she was talking to educated, intelligent people) and Big Orange Man made funny faces and "I recognize him from TV" which was part of his success.
Trump didn't come with the magic that the GOP needed. They already had that magic in the form of gerrymandering and propaganda. He was just the guy who ran and who wouldn't push back on their policies.
Lets see how hard the public pushes back in November
