I'd recommend you to look into how substantial China's claims regarding their national reserves are -- that is to say, how much do they claim to have, and how much do they actually have. Also, look into how much provincial, regional, and municipal debts the different places are under, and you will see how wealthy China really is.
Another sign to look for is how much Xi has tightened monetary outflow from China to foreign countries in recent years.
