They had "Gamers(tm)" on their side in full force, and thought nothing would flip on them. Look at the reactions ot the early reviews.. People went INSANE when there were bad reviews, issuing death threats to reviewers, etc.
CDPR had been harboring this kind of cultish fandom the whole time. It's how they got away with other crap like being gross about gender identities, etc
The bankers got greedy and pushed an unfinished game. The last delay was a scramble to get the current gen systems working, but they failed. They tried everything they could to obscure that fact, but it totally backfired on them.
You can tell who the real game reviewers are that are worth paying attention, based on the experiences they shared before and after release. Sites like Giant Bomb said from day 1 that the game was a buggy mess on PC, and while they couldn't share anything about the console versions since they didn't have them, the writing was on the wall. Other reviewers went full hype mode, giving nothing but glowing reviews, mentioning the bugs in passing or ignoring them.
A lot of egg on a lot of faces. Hopefully it'll only be the bankers that get fucked by all this, and not the devs themselves as much. They got greedy, took the opportunity to release an unfinished game before christmas, and it bit them in the ass.
