My only guess as to how they may not transmit as much as adults is that they are physically shorter, so their droplets will not as easily get into other people's noses/mouths.

If that were the case, children would be spreading it to each other though.
I don't think they really have an answer to that question yet. Only data collected globally that show the trends.
