Embarrassing as it may be, I don't actually know very much about the 911, esp the older aircooled ones. So it is very unlikely that I'd be able to pull off that "ownership without losing money" trick that you are talking about.

996 turbo, c2, c4s manual coupe
997 (all manual coupes)
993 c2s, c4s
991 carrera T, gt3 (manual), gt2 (obviously)
Have all appreciated enough over the last couple years to cover any maintenance you've done, and honestly some of them have appreciated far more than that.
That said you need
A) lots of money to start
B) the knowledge to find which cars
C) a crystal ball to know that was going to happen
That also said, you aren't gonna lose 12k in 3 months to own any of those either, basically no matter what happens.
