She said she saw the amount in her account, but I say that's BS. It may have showed the deposit amount on her statement but there's no way the funds were accessible until it cleared - some banks provide a "buffer" for cheques for immediate access but that's usually a low amount like ~$500 and they make it pretty clear you're on the hook if you're overdrawn.

In this day of ATM's and Phone Deposits. Entirely possible that they just saw "deposited" and assumed it was all good.
Having worked in retail banking for a good number of years, its unfortunately most often the age groups at the extreme spectrums that either have no insight into how banking actually works and how to protect yourself... or think they know how banking/the world works and continually shoot themselves in the foot.
