Loss and devastation are everywhere in the Sumas Prairie. We are really glad for the first responders and volunteers who put their lives on the line to ensure human life was not lost this week.
It’s being reported that 50% of dairy, poultry and eggs produced in the region are impacted by the floodwaters. Farm equipment and barns are now contaminated as the water is toxic with dead animals, animal waste, flooded septic tanks and a variety of dangerous waste. The supply of locally-grown vegetables from the area are now floating in the toxic flood waters. Milk from the cows, even those not in the flood area, is being dumped as it can’t be transported past the landslides. The hay and feed from the flooded farms have been lost.
All of this toxic water must go somewhere, so it is being pumped into the Vedder Canal and the Fraser River to save human lives. The impact on wildlife including Fraser salmon, sturgeon and eulachon, to name a few, will be felt for years to come.
