IMO, it was done to align the WRX with the rest of the lineup (which, conveniently, is covered in black plastic cladding!). Subaru is really trying to find a way to emphasize/highlight their AWD drivetrain through design now that every manufacture has AWD/4WD. What helped me cut through all the BS was learning that they actually raised the car by 0.5".
