Yeah that's flat rate work. But one would have to be good enough to not screw up constantly. Down side is when it's slow you're not making anything. I didn't make $100k till after I was 30 so good on your buddy to get to that point at 25. But it takes a toll on the hands and body. Constant standing and moving. I was also working 10-12 hr days mon-fri sometimes weekends as well. But I also had an E-Commerce site which was side hustle money that helped my NOA. Easy when I was single but now with a kid I can't be gone 12 hours a day anymore.
