If it's free, there is nothing wrong with taking it. Looks like it just alerts you whenever credit inquiries or changes are made to your account.
I can't remember what got hacked a few years ago, but I wasn't affected by it and I got a free subscription to something, maybe Equifax (which ironically also got hacked) or something else and it basically sent me an email every month if there was new activity on my credit report or an email when a check was made.
