Actually that makes me realize that the best way to describe the new one is to say it's the movie you
remember Top Gun being. All the cool flying scenes and all that is probably what most people remember, along with some moments of melodrama.. In the new one, the melodrama is there but I'd say it's less of a focus of the movie.
In a way, it's a "reboot done right". Some creators get this right (Cobra Kai is another example of this, and Kevin Smith's He-man series) and some get it wrong (most of the live action or CGI Disney remakes I'd put here... they do the exact opposite)
The same director is doing a Twister remake, so I have high hopes for that as it was one of my favourite bad 90's movies ever, and I watched it a lot on DVD.
