After searching for cars for the past few weeks I feel like a lot of cars can end up here. There are people selling cars with broken trans/engines for thousands. How is a car that can't run and drive sold for anymore than scrap?

Probably? If it's the rings thing needs a rebuild or another engine making this a 6k car with parts and labour.
