Been to Bergamo twice, fantastic city (stayed there for 4 days during the Italian GP a decade ago). Both times I've stayed in the lower and newer part of the city and take a funicular up to the old walled city. Its also a small airport you can fly into on a lot of the cheap carriers like Ryan air.
