Signing bonus gets paid at the beginning of the year, base is salary paid throughout the year.

Once you pay him the SB in the summer for that year, he becomes more attractive for teams that don't want to spend because they only need to pay his salary. So you could have a player that has $8mil cap hit, which helps you reach the cap floor, but only have to pay him $4mil or something.

If there's a lockout, players won't be getting salary. So if they get a SB that year, they guaranteed some money. (although in JT's case, it actually favors the team cause he doesn't have a SB in that year)

Players want money up front. If you made $100k/yr and you had the power to get $50k of it up front at the start of every year, why not?
