Like a cellphone automatically pinging cell phone towers, i think its just automatic where the tag just pings any apple device that has there bluetooth enabled. Im assuming cause of legalities that apple or samsung is allowed to do this cause its there own products..... i dunno im just making shit up. I have my galaxy tag attached to my kids backpack so i know where he is at all times.

Oh to answer ur question, only the apple owner of the airtag can see where it is at all times. Unless another apple user finds the tag and decides to connect it to there phone aswell to track it.
