the process varies company to company (through a system, a form, an email, etc); generally HR needs to know your leave duration, that it's approved by your manager, and so they know when to put you as unpaid leave in the system to ensure your payroll doesn't run; if you have benefits deductions, they'll need to know if you are continuing during the leave as well

applying for EI is a separate process through the Canadian govt. sites
