Many months later update - the Panasonic fans allow sideways install and they have a thin one that fits in the wall so our electrician was able to make it work

Hooked it up with a "pick your duration" timer switch that I walk by when I get in/out of the car.

The garage is definitely colder in the winter now with the hole but the heat of the car tends to keep it around 8-12 degrees most of the time (I've turned off the heat in there). Hopefully during the summer it keeps it from baking too much.
