I think most installers leave the edge because that's how the manufacturer created the files. Leaving the edges allows the film to stick better and longer because less curves. Also by leaving the edges, it allows the installer more room to manipulate the film. In my opinion, it just comes down to, much easier and faster for installers to lay it down and move on to the next one while being able to provide a decent warranty period.
