Funny thing is that my wife was happy at her old job, until a series of things made it turn sour and she stopped being happy, and instead would be coming home angry.

Then an opportunity came up to get her foot in the door with BC gov, and even with lower pay than her previous job (better benefits and work hours though) I told her to go for it.
One year in, she's already made a move to a new position 4 steps higher, and making significantly more than she was after 15 years at her old job at the wood window place, with so much more opportunity from there. But the biggest thing is that she's back to coming home happy, excited even to talk about the things she's doing at her job.
