I was sitting here thinking about this too... and I feel like they have no other alternative?
I mean, if you just beat Russia back out of Ukraine... what does Russia do? They just sit there mending themselves and collecting more troops and weapons and then they come back across the border again.
They literally have no choice but to take it to some border towns and try to affect Russia politically. It sounds like they're being very careful about evacuating civilians where they can, which is definitely not something Russia was doing... but I feel like politically Russia has left them no choice.
