That's exactly the problem for Putin -- he doesn't have any viable end games anymore.
In his original plans, this "special military operation" was only supposed to last a few weeks, and then it'll be done. But after 1+ year of war, he has no meaningful result to show -- Bakhmut has no strategic value anymore because it is basically just a pile of rubble now. They have not really gained any meaningful territories from the war, and without any sort of "gains", Putin can't justify to anyone -- including himself -- how the war can be stopped since they have poured in and wasted all these resources over the past 1+ year.
He obviously doesn't care about the loss of lives for his own Russian citizens, and if there are protests, the protesters get arrested and thrown into jail (or worse).
And so the fighting drags on.
