i've gotten by with a mid-size (honda accord) when my kids were little, and i had a side by side double stroller (just have to make sure it fits the trunk)
and some tetris/coordination with grocery shopping.
once you're past stroller - it gets much easier.
i only got a forester last couple years for comfort with road trips.
