A Rolls Royce and a BMW 7 series have about the same material cost in the same way that a Rolex and a Zenith have the same material cost.

You could easily argue that all luxury goods fit into the category of "paying for the name." The reality is you are paying for the name. But that doesn't mean that you are getting ripped off. Scientifically, a $25k Daytona does nothing better than a $400 Tissot quartz.

You can spend $7500 on a Panerai that'll be worth $5000 after 2 years. You can also spend $15000 on a Rolex that'll probably be worth $15,000 or more after 2 years. You tied up twice as much money, but it actually probably cost you less to own, even including the opportunity cost.
