The ways the industry has changed I don't think you can really compare people who were sensations in different eras. Not that long ago it was hear an artist every so often on the radio or TV, if you like them buy a CD or some merch if a store near you is selling it. Go to a show if they happen to be nearby. It needed to be made available to you, you needed to have the money to spend on it and you'd only buy each thing they put out once. Now anyone in the world who has an internet connection can be advertised to and listen to anything they want and endlessly send the artist listens/ad revenue 24/7, at no cost to themselves.
