Did you ever hear how it went with insurance? Technically BMW cones days are driving training - in theory you have coverage. Reality is he didn't have a co driver/trainer and just bought it. It was a wet/cold day mid April IIRC.

yeah he got insurance to cover it thankfully. Unfortunately ICBC only gave him like 10k for his IS300 (manual, 1 owner, low KMs... like less than 100k) which I thought was ridiculous as that's not market value. But he took it, didn't fight them for more money because I think he just wanted this whole thing over with. Can't blame him, he's pretty shook up over the thing and he didn't even drive for 4 months after the accident. I think some PTSD or something.
