How can there be no consequences for the perpetators? At a minimum, they were in possession of stolen goods -- a fact that cannot be overturned. Even if it was just a slap on the wrist, charges could have been laid.
Of course, I wouldn't be surprised to see the police not wanting to press charges even if the evidence is there. But that's different than not having enough evidence to make it stick.
