If I understand your logic right, an engine that's used in many vehicles means it's a good engine.

Specific to Toyota, the 2AZ-FE shipped million+ units across 9 model years.
It, however, had piston ring and oil return hole issues that TSB was issued for:

2007-2009 Camry
2007-2011 Camry Hybrid
2007-2008 Solara
2009-2012 Corolla
2009-2013 Matrix
2006-2008 Rav4
2007-2010 Scion Tc
2008-2015 Scion Xb

They're also shipping the V35 across ~400k units and 8 model years.
This motor, however, has con-rod and main bearing issues that are ongoing.
