I think most people would never go through with it once they found out how much work it is. I give my wife credit for actually following through, the consulate is absolutely useless so you have to be incredibly proactive in your application. As well, she had to register a marriage and two separate death certificates in Portugal, and find a birth certificate from a church in the Azores. It was pretty crazy but eventually a citizenship card showed up in the mail lol
