I've done one course in UI design, and icons are much much much better than text in a glance environment like a dashboard. That's why basic gauges were around for so damn long because it works.

Interesting on the icons becoming universal ... we were taught icon + label in our UX course
I've also still yet to try the BMW hands free / MB / GM ones where the status is on the steering wheel
