I'm surprised to hear you say it's all very racist outside of London if you've spent time there. Of course there's a-holes everywhere in the world, and England absolutely isn't short of those, but I don't recall any conversations that really ran afoul except perhaps when the conversation came to 'Travelers'.
But obviously Nigel Farage's popularity is a counterpoint and I do get that.

I didn't think it was when I travelled with my family there, granted we're all white... but when I brought my ex-wife who was Taiwanese there and we stayed awhile and toured all over the place we got treated very, very differently lots of disparaging looks... lots of experiences with people talking to her like "HELLO... DO... YOU... SPEAK... ENGLISH" and generally poor service at eating places I had frequented with no issues in the past. It was a real eye opener.
Most of Europe is/was (this is anecdotal from 15 years ago now) like that to be fair though, I went on a trip all over Europe with a Polish friend and we had the run of the town every city and country we went, but I did the same route with a friend from Hong Kong 1 year later and it was a completely different experience... getting stopped by police for no reason, bad or dismissive service, ignored, even to the point when we walked into the LV store on Champs D'Elysees they stopped him at the door to check his passport because they didn't let people from China in at the time for fear of them buying to counterfeit (and there were actually ladies outside the store trying to coerce with cash for people to go in and buy for them) lol
