The underlying tensions have always been there. It's now "ok" to be more overt about it., as people are seeing that that behavior by leaders/'elites' are acceptable and not pushed back on. Attention being paid to ethnic groups for any reason brings it the the forefront of peoples' minds.
In Vancouver, I grew up with the "chinky/slant eye" shit in the 80's, and those kind of micro aggressions largely died down until the mid 90's with the HK immigration increase from the HK handover. Again, I didn't experience many direct racial incidents after until Covid.
Worst one was some fucker in a beat up Dodge minivan tried to run me off the road on Renfrew while screaming "CHIIIIINKKKK!!!" out the window at my family.
